Varicose Veins can form anywhere in the body, but they are most often located in the legs. Varicose Veins tend to be inherited and become more prominent as a person ages. The veins in the leg are either superficial or deep. The superficial veins and their branches are close to the skin.

Veins have bivalved valves that help direct flow towards the heart. A malfunction of venous valves causes blood to pool and prevents the flow. This presents as visibly swollen and tortuous veins. It is usually asymptomatic and you may notice discolouration or swollen veins, especially in the legs and feet. Few people also experience leg pain, itching and swollen legs.

Varicose Veins do not always need treatment. If your Varicose Veins are not causing you discomfort, you may not need to have treatment.

Treatment of Varicose Veins is usually only necessary to:

• Ease symptoms – if your Varicose Veins are causing you pain or discomfort
• Treat complications – such as leg ulcers, swelling or skin discolouration
• Cosmetic reasons - Some people also get treatment for cosmetic reasons

A follow up appointment will be made post-surgery either the next day or within few days to assess healing. There will be swelling after the treatment and the real results of your procedure will not be visible until after the initial swelling caused by the treatment has completely gone. You should then see a vast improvement.

This is considered a minor procedure and will require minimal time off work. However this is dependant on each individual and the occupation. We will go through this and advise you accordingly during the consultation.

Varicose Veins are usually caused by weak vein walls and valves. Inside your veins are tiny one-way valves that open to let the blood through, and then close to prevent it flowing backwards. Sometimes the walls of the veins become stretched and lose their elasticity, causing the valves to weaken.
