Why do we get it?
Ingrown hair happens when the sharp tip of a hair curls back on itself or grows sideways into the skin, usually appearing as a pink or red bump, a bit like a pimple. It’s a very common skin condition that tends to occur mainly in areas with coarse hairs, like the bikini area in women, and beard and neck areas in men. Ingrown hairs can happen naturally but tend to occur more on those women and men who shave regularly or use other hair removal techniques such as waxing and epilating. Wearing tight clothing can also encourage and worsen ingrown hair due to friction.
Prevention and Reduction
Ingrown hair can be significantly reduced by regular exfoliation or medical Microdermabrasion, which work to lift any small hairs, encourage healthy hair growth and stimulate the follicles. Moisturising can also help to keep the skin and hairs soft, making it more difficult for hair to become ingrown, and wearing loose clothing can also prevent any areas of ingrown hair getting worse.
Effective treatments for Ingrown Hair
For many people, instances of ingrown hair will correct themselves, but it can last for a long time and can be difficult to get rid of it. Available treatments include chemical depilatories, topical creams, topical antibiotics and laser hair removal. At The Harley Medical Group, laser treatments work by targeting the specific problematic area to help damage and weaken the hair follicles and permanently reduce their ability to produce hairs. The treatment tends to work best on dark, coarse hair, however we are able to treat those with blonde hair.
Laser Hair Removal is a very fast, efficient and safe way to prevent ingrown hairs from reoccurring and permanently removing or reducing hair at the same time.
